College Faculty:Contemporary Performance Program: Piano
Anthony de Mare is internationally recognized as one of the world’s foremost champions of contemporary music and has inspired the creation of dozens of new works by some of today’s most distinguished artists. His latest project, Liaisons: Re-Imagining Sondheim from the Piano, brings together 36 of today’s most highly regarded composers to bring the work of musical theater maestro Stephen Sondheim into the concert hall while spanning the classical contemporary, jazz, film, theater and pop worlds.
Currently on the roster of Yamaha Artists, he has been variously praised for his “muscularly virtuosic, remarkably uninhibited performance [and] impressive talents” (Anthony Tommasini, The New York Times). Having been awarded first prize and audience prize at the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition (The Netherlands) and the International Competition of Contemporary Piano Music (France), de Mare debuted under the auspices of Young Concert Artists and gave his solo Carnegie Hall debut at Zankel Hall. Mr. de Mare has nearly twenty recordings in his discography: SPEAK! The Speaking-Singing Pianist, the first disc devoted completely to the genre he created over twenty years ago, released in 2010 on Innova; Out of My Hands (KOCH Entertainment), short-listed for a 2005 Grammy Award; and Wizards and Wildmen: Piano Music of Charles Ives, Henry Cowell and Lou Harrison (CRI /New World) named as one of 2000’s Ten Best Releases by American Record Guide. Other acclaimed recordings include Pianos and Voices: Music by John Cage and Meredith Monk; Frederic Rzewski – Anthony de Mare(O.O. Discs); and Oblivion (Koch).
He holds the BM from MSM, and the MFA from SUNY Buffalo, having studied under Yvar Mikhashoff, Paul Jacobs, Leo Smit and Isabelle Yalkovsky Byman. A member of the Manhattan School of Music faculty since 1993, he is currently a member of the Contemporary Performance faculty and also Professor of Piano at NYU-Steinhardt. His commitment to education is evidenced by his residency work at universities across North America, in which he has inspired a whole new generation of pianists and contemporary music advocates, encouraging them to initiate creative strategies as innovative entrepreneurs.
