Manhattan School of Music is an international school that welcomes students from all over the world.
In addition to its regular admissions process for degree programs and certificates, MSM accepts applications from exchange students in the two broad categories defined below.
Students in MSM’s partner schools may apply to spend one year or one semester at MSM. MSM’s partner schools are located below:
SYDNEY CONSERVATORIUM, Sydney
ROYAL DANISH ACADEMY OF MUSIC, Copenhagen
SIBELIUS ACADEMY, Helsinki
CONSERVATOIRE NATIONAL SUPÉRIEUR DE MUSIQUE ET DE DANSE DE PARIS, Paris
MUSIKHOCHSCHULE STUTTGART, Stuttgart
AMSTERDAM CONSERVATORY, Amsterdam
NORWEGIAN ACADEMY OF MUSIC, Oslo
ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC, London
ROYAL CONSERVATOIRE OF SCOTLAND, Glasglow
If you are a student at any of the schools listed above, you may apply to MSM for exchange. In order to be considered, first, you must go to the exchange programs coordinator at your own school, and then ask to be recommended for ours. Typically, schools limit the number of students they recommend for any particular exchange program, so it is important to begin with this first step. If you are recommended for exchange by your school’s exchange coordinator, you may begin your online MSM Exchange application. Please contact the Office of Admissions at admission@msmnyc.edu if you have any questions.
Because we must balance the number of exchange students here at MSM, we are not always able to accept even very well-qualified exchange applicants. You may be assured that MSM will take your application seriously and will accommodate as many recommended students as we can.
If you have received study abroad grants from governments or private foundations (ex. Fulbright), you may apply to spend up to one year at MSM as an exchange student. Applications in this category are not limited to MSM’s partner schools; any student may apply as long as the funding comes from a government or foundation source. If you are the recipient of such a grant, you may begin your MSM Exchange application. You will be asked to specify the source of your funding. If your school has an exchange coordinator or international student advisor, please supply that information so that all the grant requirements can be met. Contact the Office of Admissions, admission@msmnyc.edu if you have any questions.
Audition requirements for exchange applicants are the same as the regular college application requirements. View the audition requirements here.
No. Exchange applicants to MSM should submit recorded auditions only.
A TOEFL score is not required. Select exchange applicants may be required to have a Skype interview with the Director of MSM’s ESL support program.
Please contact the Office of Admissions, admission@msmnyc.edu.
Applications will be available on our website on March 1. The deadline for applications is April 1. We will be able to give most students a result on or before May 1. Earlier applications may get earlier results, so it is to your advantage to apply as soon as you know you are interested.
If your school is not listed, you will need a grant or other non-personal funding to attend MSM as an exchange student. MSM occasionally adds new partners, so please speak to your own school’s international office about your interest in MSM.
Please seek information from your advisors at your current school.
The application process is the same; you should begin by speaking with the exchange program coordinator at your school.
Exchange students from one of MSM’s partner institutions do not pay tuition or fees to MSM. Exchange students who are not from one of MSM’s partner institutions pay full tuition and all student fees to MSM through government or foundation funding. Exchange students may choose to live in MSM’s on-campus residence hall, but students should put their request in as soon as possible. If choosing to live off-campus, exchange students must purchase a commuter meal plan. If living on-campus, exchange students will pay for housing, a resident meal plan, and other related fees.
Students accepted into MSM exchange programs will receive instructions and assistance in obtaining US visas through MSM’s office of International Student Services.
Exchange students enroll in lessons, ensembles and classes along with regular students, but they do not receive degrees from MSM. The MSM credits earned by exchange students will transfer back to their home schools.
You may decline your offer, however, please inform MSM as soon as possible so that we can consider another student.
