Thomas Smith

A native of Detroit, Thomas V. Smith came to the New York Philharmonic as fourth and utility trumpet in July 1998. He is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and the New England Conservatory of Music, where he received a bachelor’s degree with distinction in 1981. He continued orchestral studies at Tanglewood with the fellowship program in the summers of 1981 and 1982 and began a freelance career in Boston playing with Sarah Caldwell’s Opera Company of Boston and Gunther Schuller’s New England Ragtime Ensemble. He also performed regularly with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, the Boston Pops, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Boston Ballet and Boston Lyric Opera.

An avid chamber musician, Mr. Smith has performed with the new music groups Collage, Musica Viva, and Alea III. Most recent performances include the New York Philharmonic Ensembles, the New York Philharmonic Chamber Music at 92d Street Y, and a tour of Japan this summer with the New York Philharmonic Brass Quintet. He has recorded with the Empire Brass, Boston Pops, and New England Ragtime Ensemble. His principal teachers included Robert Nagel, Vincent Penzarella, Allen Dean, and Roger Voisin. Mr. Smith is on the faculties of Queens College and Manhattan School of Music. Manhattan School of Music College faculty since 1998.
