Composer Dr. Adolphus Hailstork’s (BM ’65, MM ’66, HonDMA ’19) Three Spirituals for Orchestra (2005) were performed by the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra (Maryland) as part of the Symphony’s “Music Masterworks” series. Dr. Hailstork’s Two Romances for Viola and Orchestra as well as Symphony No. 1 were performed by the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra as part of the Orchestra’s celebration of Black History Month.

1970-1979
Dr. Elaine Bearer (BM ’70) premiered her new work Canticle of Mary: A Magnificat for choir, descant, and organ soloist at Anaheim United Methodist Church.
Dr. Norman Carey (BM ’72, MM ’74) was named Interim Provost and Senior Vice President of the CUNY Graduate Center for 2024–25. Previously, he served as Music Department Chair following his directorship of the school’s D.M.A. program in music performance.

MSM classical piano alumnus Flavio Varani (BM ’68, MM ’70) gave a special recital in the Manhattan School of Music Peter Jay Sharp President’s Residence. The evening’s program consisted of Chopin’s Four Ballades, which were the subject of a recent master class presented by Mr. Varani in MSM’s Mikowsky Recital Hall on November 21.

1980-1989
Composer Paul Brantley (BM ’83) presented a concert of four original works at Columbia University, including two premieres. The performers were pianist Steve Beck, guitarist Dr. Dan Lippel (DMA ’06), cellist Laura Metcalf, and soprano/alto-flutist Alice Teyssier.
Pianist Dr. John McArthur (BM ’80, MM ’82, DMA ’87) has released The HIDDEN Project, his return to public music-making after a 20-year journey away from his career and into Alzheimer’s caregiving. HIDDEN / 1 presents a remix & remaster of music originally recorded in 1999 and HIDDEN / 2 offers pieces more recently recorded.
Violinist Sachiho Murasugi (BM ’86) and the Allegheny Ensemble performed in the annual Salisbury University “Fascinating Rhythm” concert in the Great Hall of Holloway. The quartet was augmented by special guest string players in their renditions of works by Gershwin as well as Brahms’s Viola Quintet in G major.

1990-1999
Jazz Arts Flute Faculty member Jamie Baum (MM ’99) toured Europe and India in Monika Herzig’s band celebrating the ensemble’s fourth CD release. The Jamie Baum Septet+ also performed selections from their highly acclaimed album What Times are These (Sunnyside, 2024) in the NYC NOW – Mini-Fest in Manhattan’s West Village. Baum’s Quartet also toured the West Coast, performing at SFJazz among other locations.
MSM composition faculty member and soprano Susan Botti (MM ’90) was awarded a NYSCA (New York State Council for the Arts) grant for a new work for her ensemble Duo della Luna in collaboration with poets with the Dream Project Writing for Resilience Cohort.
Classical pianist Carolina Flores (BM ’93, MM ’96) began her post as Associate Professor of Choral Music and Director of Choral Activities at The Hartt School, University of Hartford (CT).
Mitchel Forman (’97) performed as a guest artist with the University of Nevada at Las Vegas Wind Orchestra, featuring saxophonist Eric Marienthal.
Classical pianist Gila Goldstein (BM ’90) released her latest album, consisting of composer Ronn Yedidia’s 24 Preludes of Dusk and Dawn (Albany, 2025).
Jazz Pianist and composer D.D. Jackson (MM ’91) celebrated the release of his album Poetry Project (Indépendant Records, 2024) with shows in Toronto, performing a solo concert featuring songs written by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and himself at The Redwood Theatre in Toronto.
Tenor Brandon Jovanovich (’98) opened the second half of the Metropolitan Opera’s current season as “Captain Ahab” in Jake Heggie’s adaptation of Herman Melville’s novel Moby-Dick.
MSM classical trombone alumnus Tony Mazzocchi (BM ’95, MM ’97) was named the new Executive Director of the Kaufman Music Center in New York City, a performing arts complex that houses Lucy Moses School, Special Music School, the Merkin Hall concert venue, and the new Pathways program for low-income middle school students.
Vocalist N’Kenge Pacurar (BM ’96) raised over $40,000 at the N’Kenge Foundation’s inaugural gala. The Foundation uplifts BIPOC voices in the arts. The gala honored Tony Award-winner LaChanze and actor/author/philanthopist Holly Robinson Peete. Jazz Piano alumnus Eric Lewis a.k.a. ELEW (BM ’97) was among the Gala performers. Pacurar also performed with her All-Star Quartet at The Jazz Club at The Aman, The Ned Nomad, and The Club Room at Soho Grand, the latter two including jazz bass alumna Dr. Melissa Slocum (MM ’96).
Dr. Marc Peloquin (MM ’89, DMA ’95) continues his piano duo series “KeyedUp” at New York’s Tenri Cultural Institute with a program entitled “Fantasy Worlds,” featuring long-time collaborator Dr. Robert Hidalgo (DMA ’95). Marc and Robert performed works by Wharton, del Tredici, Poulenc, and Ravel.

2000-2009
Classical composer Andy Akiho (MM ’09) was given the Young Artist Award at the 2024 Beijing Music Festival.
Christopher Allen (BM ’08) conducted Orquestra Clasica Santa Cecelia in a performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in Eb Major (“Emperor”) at Madrid’s Auditorio Nacional de Musica. And following the recent release of the Fourth Wall Ensemble’s single “The Parting Glass,” featuring Irish tenor Emmet Cahill, Christopher will lead Fourth Wall with Cahill in a performance at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall of their program “Echoes of Ireland.” Additionally, House of Cards composer Jeff Beal’s soundtrack for the film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was released late last year. The album features the Fourth Wall Ensemble as conducted by Christopher.
Jazz trombonist and composer Doug Beavers (MM ’02) led the Spanish Harlem Orchestra in a performance at SFJAZZ Center.
Luis Bonilla (MM ’04) appeared as featured soloist with the Croation Radiotelevision Jazz Orchestra at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb. The program was entitled New York – Impressions in Latin Jazz
Mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges (BM ’09) was featured throughout Symphony Tacoma’s “Passion & Intrigue” concert program, comprised of works by Puccini, Bizet, and Ravel. She also starred as “Queen Dido” in the Seattle Opera production of Berlioz’s Les Troyens á Carthage. Additionally, she and fellow MSM mezzo-soprano alumna Susan Graham (MM ’87, HonDMA ’08) performed in the Kennedy Center staging of Barber’s Vanessa. Bridges sang the role of Erika, and Graham sang the role of The Old Baroness. Additionally, baritone Thomas Hampson (HonDMA ’09), a member of MSM’s Artistic Advisory Board, sang the role of The Old Doctor.
Classical guitarist Rupert Boyd (BM ’06) continues his worldwide concert tour, alternating between solo performances, cello-guitar duo Boyd Meets Girl (with his wife Laura Metcalf), and with Boyd Meets Girl as soloists in Clarice Assad’s double concerto ANAHATA, which was written for the duo.
Composer Christopher Cerrone (BM ’07) announced the upcoming release of his debut album, Don’t Look Down (Pentatone 2025), featuring Sandbox Percussion, pianist Conor Hanick, and mezzo-soprano Elspeth Davis. Christopher was also named Composer of the Month by music publisher Theodore Front.
Jazz pianist Gerald Clayton (’05) performed with trumpeter Nicholas Payton at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke, North Carolina.
A composition by Anna Clyne (MM ’05), commissioned for and recorded by the BBC Philharmonic began the British Broadcasting Corporation’s new series, 25 for 25: Sounds of the Century, which consists of 25 commissions for BBC ensembles and New Generation Artists.
Melinda Faylor (MM ’05) was musical director and pianist for the Vervet Dance Company’s performance of Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time alongside violinist Charlotte Munn-Wood, clarinetist Mara Mayer, and cellist Julie Kim at Philadelphia’s Icebox Project Space.
Drummer-composer Devin Gray (MM ’08) released Melt All the Guns II, featuring Ralph Alessi on trumpet and Myslaure Augustin on piano.
Classical pianist Kirill Gerstein‘s (BM ’99, MM ’00, HonDMA ’21) album Music in Time of War (Myrios Classics, 2024) and tenor Nicholas Phan‘s (’02) album A Change is Gonna Come (Azica, 2024) were named to the New York Times “Best Classical Music Albums of 2024” list.
Baritone and musicologist Derek Greten-Harrison (BM ’04) restored 41 original orchestral film arrangements from 20th Century-Fox films of the 1940s-50s—including the complete score to Rodgers & Hammerstein’s State Fair—and made the world premiere stereo recordings of them with conductor David Charles Abell and the BBC Concert Orchestra.
Maeve Höglund’s (MM ’07) recent and upcoming engagements include Pamina in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Alcina (title role), Anne Trulove in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, Princess Cunegonde in Offenbach’s Le Roi Carotte with Theater Freiburg, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with the Grant Music Festival in Chicago, and a return to the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp in two new roles for the 2025–26 season.
Jazz Trombone Faculty member Ryan Keberle (BM ’01) led his ensemble, Catharsis, in a West Coast tour celebrating their first album in five years, Music is Connection (Groove Monkey Music, 2024). The group’s album release performance took place at the Jazz Gallery (NYC).
Cellist Amit Peled and pianist Martin Labazevitch (BM ’03, MM ’07, PS ’08) performed works by Edvard Grieg, Friedrich Gulda, and Gaspar Cassadó in St. Ann Catholic Church in Washington, D.C.
The Zodiac Trio, comprised of pianist Riko Higuma (BM ’01, MM ’03), clarinetist Kliment Krylovskiy (BM ’06), and violinist Vanessa Mollard (BM ’05), performed as a part of Northern Michigan University’s Siril Concert Series.
Soprano Rosana Orsini (MM ’02) performed as a part of the 17th annual Algarve International Organ Festival in Portugal.
Guitarist Matt Panayides (BM ’00) embarked on a tour celebrating the release of his trio album With Eyes Closed (Pacific Coast Jazz, 2024).
Tenor Nicholas Phan‘s (’02) album A Change is Gonna Come (Azica 2024) was included on Gramophone magazine’s “Critic’s Choice 2024” best-of-the-year list.
Soprano Alyssa Ronco (MM ’07) appeared as a soloist in the Susquehanna Valley Chorale’s performances of “Alzheimer’s Stories: A Monument to Memory” at Stretansky Hall at Susquehanna University (Pennsylvania).
Alto/soprano saxophonist and MSM Jazz Arts faculty member Jaleel Shaw (MM ’02) performed with pianist Cameron Campbell at Solar Myth in Philadelphia.
Utah Symphony Principal Flutist Mercedes Smith (BM ’03) started a line of formalwear called Blackstrad designed to redefine concert attire for the modern musician.
Dr. Magdalena Stern-Baczewska (DMA ’08) was interviewed by NBC News about the previously unknown Chopin Waltz that was recently unearthed in the files of the Morgan Library in Manhattan. It was the first time in over a century that such a discovery was made.
Jazz pianist and composer Donald Vega (MM ’07) announced the upcoming release of his new single “Two Words: Bud Powell” (Imagery Records/Tiger Turn, 2025), featuring jazz luminaries John Patitucci, bass, and Lewis Nash, drums.
Spokane Symphony (Washington) Mateusz Wolski (BM ’99, MM ’01) presented a TEDx Talk entitled “Could Artificial Intelligence Beat Mozart at his Own Game?” He also performed as a part of the Spokane String Quartet at the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, performing Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 7 in F-sharp minor and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 3 in D Major. Cellist Michal Palzewicz (BM ’99) joined for Alexander Glazunov’s String Quintet in A Major.
Classical pianist Dr. Maria Yefimova (MM ’99, DMA ’07) performed a solo concert at the Water Island Music Festival in St. Thomas.
MSM Classical Piano Faculty member Dr. Lisa Yui’s (DMA ’05) online course on J.S. Bach’s Italian Concerto launched on Tonebase Piano, a popular platform for classical music education with over 25,000 active members worldwide. In this series, Dr. Yui delves into the history and style of this immensely popular piece, offering technical guidance on ornamentation, pedaling, and more.

Baritone Benjamin Dickerson (BM ’16), soprano Sofia Gotch (MM ’23, PPD ’25), soprano Eva Rae Martinez (BM ’23), and mezzo-soprano Anna Maria Vacca (BM ’22, MM ’24) were admitted to the 2025 Merola Opera Program in San Francisco.
SeokJong Baek (MM ’18) returned to the Metropolitan Opera to sing the role of “Cavaradossi” in Puccini’s Tosca before taking the role to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. He also covered the role of “Radamès” for the Metropolitan Opera’s early January performances of Verdi’s Aida.
Violinist Christina Bouey (MM ’11, PS ’12, PS ’13) joined the Albany Symphony as its new Concertmaster Lifetime Chair.
Soprano Corrine Byrne (MM ’12) recently began work as an instructor in the Harvard University Holden Voice Program.
Violist Alison Comerford (MM ’17) performed at Finding a Voice Festival at Triskel Arts Centre, Cork, Ireland on March 8, marking International Women’s Day. The group performed works by Elizabeth Maconchy, Ailbhe McDonagh, and Florence Price.
Vocalist Lacey Connell (BM ’11) played the role of “Marian Paroo” in the White Theatre’s production of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man in Kansas City.
Trombonist and vocalist Natalie Cressman (BM ’13) performed with the Gurgel Duo and vocalist Sandy Cressman at Oakland’s The Sound Room.
Vocalist Christie Dashiell (MM ’13) is a participant in Next Jazz Legacy (NJL), a program that expands opportunities for women and nonbinary artists historically underrepresented in jazz. NJL was cofounded by multihyphenate artist Terri Lyne Carrington (HonDMA ’20).
Jazz trumpeter Jonathan Dely (MM ’17) performed at SFJAZZ’s Joe Henderson Lab and The Jazz Club at The Aman NYC.
Classical pianist Isabel Pérez Dobarro (PS ’13) released her first solo album, Kaleidoscope (2024) on the Naxos-Grand Piano label.
Flutist Brandon Patrick George (MM ’10) performed at the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival (New York) as a part of its “Baroque Bounty” program.
Bassist, drummer and producer Daryl Johns (’17) released his self-titled debut album (Mac’s Record Label, 2024).
Arts Executive and cellist Blake-Anthony Johnson (’16) was appointed Chief Executive Officer of The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation.
Jazz pianist Cliff Korman (DMA ’12) released album Urban Tracks (Sol Re Sol, 2024) with MSM Jazz Bass faculty member Harvie S and drummer Rafael Barata.
Jazz tenor saxophonist Adam Larson (BM ’12, MM ’14) performed with the Narrative Quintet at Marietta College as a part of its “Esbenshade Series”.
Jazz bassist Kaisa Mäensivu (MM ’17) and her ensemble, Kaisa’s Machine, performed at Small’s Jazz Club in NYC.
Intermezzo, a new work by MSM Classical Composition faculty member Dr. Paolo Marchettini (DMA ’14), was premiered by the Nuova Orchestra Scarlatti of Naples in Chiesa dei SS. Marcellino e Festo. An announcement leading up to the premiere appeared in the Naples division of Italy’s top newspaper, La Repubblica.
MUC Dr. Kevin McDonald (MM ’12), drummer for Premiere U.S. Military ensemble The U.S. Navy Commodores, contributed a chapter on jazz luminary drummer and MSM alumnus Max Roach (’52, HonDMA ’90) to the recently published scholarly book Leading Figures in the History of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (University Press of Florida, 2025), edited by Judson L. Jeffries.
Soprano Jana McIntyre (MM ’16) began the 24/25 season with The Orchestra Now singing Strauss’ Vier Letzte Lieder and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. She performed Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Maestro Gustavo Dudamel in her debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Teatro Mayor in Bogota, Colombia. McIntyre made her New York Philharmonic debut in October, singing Boulez’s Pli selon pli.
Music Director Dr. Malcolm Merriweather (DMA ’15) led the Desoff Choirs in a performance at Union Theological Seminary.
MSM classical composition alumnus Alfonso Molina‘s (MM ’10) Monarch: A Mexican-American Musical won multiple Broadway World Washington, D.C. Regional Awards in December 2024. The production, staged late in 2023 at Creative Cauldron, received the distinctions of “Best Musical” and “Best New Play or Musical,” while Alfonso’s collaborator and sister Mayu Molina Lehmann won “Best Direction of a Musical.”
Violinist Joo Young Oh (PS ’10) performed as Concertmaster of the Qatar Philharmonic at the PUE-Theatre Qatar Foundation.
Hornist Joshua Pantoja (MM ’11) performed his program “Underground Jazz: Sounds of Puerto Rico” in Cape Girardeau’s Scout Hall (Missouri).
Jazz pianist Arcoiris Sandoval (MM ’12) and her Sonic Asylum Trio performed at the Tuscon Jazz Festival.
Trumpeter Eganam “Égo” Segbefia (MM ’18) won the inaugural New York Knicks That’s NY Talent halftime competition (as well as $50,000) on February 26, in an NBA game against the Philadelphia 76ers. He will return to Madison Square Garden (MSG) for the Winner’s Halftime Performance on Friday, April 11th, 2025 for the last home game of their season against the Cleveland Cavaliers. In November of 2023, Égo performed U.S. National Anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner” at MSG for a New York Knicks home game against the Miami Heat.
Dr. Aaron Short (MM ’13) graduated from Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music with a Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice and Opera Performance degree.
Taylor Smith (MM ’14) was appointed to Alabama Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Principal Bassoon.
Violinist Dr. Jinyoung Song (MM ’15) appeared in concert with pianist R. Rachel Yunkyung Choo as a part of the Raritan Valley Community College MOZAIKA Chamber Music Concert Series.
Pianist Harriet Stubbs (MM ’13) performed her solo piano show at City Winery (NYC).
MSM classical violin alumna Jihye Sung (BM ’14, MM ’16) was named Associate Concertmaster of the Bozeman Symphony. She joined the Symphony in 2022 as a section violinist, also at times serving as Principal Second Violinist, and as guest Associate Concertmaster.
Violinist Anna Takeda (MM ’18, PS ’19) performed trios with pianist Eri Nakagawa and cellist Adam Satinsky at Ben’s Theatre in Pattaya, Thailand.
Classical pianist Charlotte Tang (PS ’18) was named one of two Laureates in the Musique Antique (MA) Competition 2024 in Bruges, Belgium. An internationally-renowned historical instrument triennial competition, this edition of MA focused on pianoforte (historical piano). From the Toronto area, Charlotte was selected as one of five pianists to advance to the final round, the furthest of any North American participant.
Bass-baritone Hans Tashjian (MM ’13) appeared in concert with pianist Anna Keiserman at the Grunin Center for the Arts in New Jersey.
Anna Webber‘s (MM ’10) Simple Trio performed at King Center Recital Hall in Colorado.

2020-2024
Flutist Leo Sussman, violinist Jisu Choi, and pianist Tianyu Deng, each of whom earned their respective DMA degrees from MSM this past spring, performed a concert of works by Boulez, Berio and Schoenberg at the Resnick-Passlof gallery (Manhattan).
Classical trumpeter Imani Duhe (BM ’20) is subbing in the Los Angeles Philharmonic and teaching in the organization’s Youth Orchestra Los Angeles. She recently performed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Ford Theater.
Jazz bassist Ben Feldman (BM ’21) performed as a part of the Summer Camargo Trio at Jersey Jazz LIVE!
The Riverside Opera Company (Staten Island) featured the winners of its open auditions at its “A Night at the Opera” concert. Among them was tenor Vincenzo Fiorito (BM ’24).
Musical Theatre alumna Jordan Paige Fox (BM ’21) performed at The Hazeltine in a concert entitled “Putting it Together,” a pastiche of songs from Stephen Sondheim’s best-known musicals, under the direction of Don Langford.
Choreographer Miro Magloire presents his New Chamber Ballet in the premieres of two of his new works: Vox, set to music by contemporary composer Elizabeth Gartman (MM ’21); and The Distance Between Bones, music by Dr. Ya-Lan Chan (DMA ’23).
MSM vocal arts student Sofia Gotch (MM’ 23, PPD ’25) was one of 20 semifinalists in the Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition selected from an applicant pool of nearly 1,500 aspiring opera singers.
Baritone Henry Griffin (BM ’23) was a guest conductor for the Handel Week Festival in Oak Park, Illinois. Henry was named the Mark & Randi Ravitts Conducting Fellow for the Festival.
Violinist Risa Hokamura (BM ’24), a Young Concert Artist and first-year master’s student of Lucie Robert and Koichiro Harada, performed Ysaÿe’s Six Sonatas for Solo Violin at Kioi Hall (Tokyo).
Soprano Shelén Hughes (BM ’18, MM ’20) was a Semifinalist in the 2024 Young Concert Artists Susan Wadsworth International Competition.
Baritone Ashton Jones (MM ’21) was appointed as Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at Texas Southern University. Jones will earn his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in May 2025 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music.
Hannah Jones (MM ’24) made her Seattle Opera debut in the world premiere of Tazewell Thompson’s opera Jubilee.
MSM alumni sopranos Emilie Kealani (BM ’21), Tess Levine (BM ’23), and Jouelle Roberson (PS ’22) were selected for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’s 2025 Young Artist Development Program.
Oboist Dominik Klemetsrud (BM ’24) joined the U.S. Navy Fleet Bands, winning a summer audition and completing basic training in the early winter.
In the 2024 Best Classical Musicians Awards, as presented by the World Online Music Competitions Organization, the Three J’s – clarinetist Juhyun Lee (PS ’24), violinist Jihyun Baik (PPD ’25), and pianist Juejiamin Ying (PPD ’24) – won the Diamond Prize for Best Chamber performance, Platinum Prize for Best Modern Period performance, and Special Prize for Remarkable Teamwork.
Composer Jacob Leibowitz (BM ’23) was named one of 13 LABA Fellows in the Laboratory for Jewish Culture program at the 14th Street Y in New York City. The artists in the Fellowship will spend the next year exploring Jewish texts to inspire new works around the theme of change.
Pianist Ali Mammadoff (BM ’19, MM ’21) performed in the Kansas Public Radio Live Performance Studio in late fall.
Classical pianist Sofia Melikyan (MM ’06) gave a recital at the Palau de la Música in Valencia marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ricardo Viñes, remembered as a gifted pianist and intellectual, and a passionate defender of the music of his time. Sofia’s latest solo album, Présence lointaine (Rubicon Classics, 2024) is dedicated to Viñes and includes his compositions as well as works by Ravel, Fauré, Séverac, Satie and Mompou.
Soprano Sophia Santiago (MM ’21) gave a recital with pianist Benjamin D’Annibale consisting of lieder by Schubert and Wolf presented by West Jersey Chamber Music Society at the First Presbyterian Church of Moorestown.
Soprano So-Chung Shinn (MM ’19, PS ’21, PPD ’24) performed in “A Night to Remember,” a free grand gala concert celebrating Opera Carolina’s 75th-anniversary season.
Benjamin Sokol (BM ’22, MM ’24, PS ’25) was accepted into the 2025–2026 Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Ryan Opera Center Ensemble. Benjamin also received Third Prize in the Mario Lanza Institute Scholarship Competition.
