This presentation of three French works – Massenet’s Le Portrait de Manon, Ibert’s Angelique, and Faure’s Pavane (Choral Version) – offers a varied examination of the anticipation and effects of marriage on familial generations. Le Portrait de Manon details the struggle of young lovers, in a time long past, desperate to wed but deterred by class and inheritance. Angelique is a whirlwind farce, staged in the style of a pre-code cartoon, exposing the comedic realities of frustration, compromise, and forgiveness that emerge to test a spouse’s true love. And Pavane serves as a symbolist choral meditation of five generations of women looking back at their mother’s marriages.
This production is presented in honor of the Gart Family Foundation and in recognition of their ongoing generosity.
MSM Opera Theatre is made possible in part by the Joseph F. McCrindle Endowment for Opera Productions.
